BATO-DE-LUNA: THE BEAUTY AMIDST THE CALMNESS
The house that was constructed along the coast of La Union is called “Bahay na Bato”, it is entirely made from pebbles and stones that were found along the sidewalks and the beaches of the city’s municipality. The city is called Pebble Capital of the North because stone-picking is its most famous and booming industry. Aside from the painted pebbles, the wooden sculptures and the stone foundation that was made by Bong Kim, a Korean, it also has interiors and an underground that is the secret hideaway of the Noble’s.
After a few years, their secret hideaway was made public. In the year 2015, the couple opened their Bahay na Bato to the public, as it was encouraged by their local tourism government, and it was made as the tourist destination of the place. Soon after the opening, the local government and the tourist office had recorded a massive number of tourists and guests that were attracted to the new destination. In a report by the local news, this tourist destination attracted almost 20,000 visitors during the holidays, shortly after its opening.
Once you enter the place, you can relish the beautiful sight of the western sea hitting the shoreline of Luna that is full of different kinds of pebbles. The mansions are filled with a backyard and it has an arranged art decoration made of stones. There are corals placed on the walls of the mansion, the pebbles are placed flat on the floors of the mansion with no cement. Because of its refreshing design and interior, it has become one of the best places to rest.
The town of Luna, La Union is famous for it stones that comes in natural shapes. And Bato De Luna make used if this stones to create different shapes and statues. Bato de Luna is an art gallery that showcases the works of Mr. Bong Kim, a Korean stone sculptor. It exhibits different art using stones and mural arts. It is located in Nalvo Norte, Luna, La Union. Prior to Bato de Luna, there was Bahay na Bato, then Kamay na Bato (Stone Hand). Bahay na Bato is the resthouse of Dr. Edison and Dra. Purita Chan Noble, constructed along the coast of Luna, La Union. It was decorated by Mr. Kim with carved stones, antique materials, and wood carvings. The couple opened their resthouse to the public in 2015 and we were able to visit it in 2016. Mr. Bong Kim a Korean artist, open his art gallery for those tourists who is attracted to his creations. Since Luna is rich in stones and pebbles, he gives life in stone. The site has stone sculptures and a 3D wall paintings, canvass and clay sculpture.
This house is open for any type of occasion, like baptisms, weddings, parties and other functions that you and your family may have. If you wish to spend a night under the stars, then you can sit and have fun around their very own bonfire pits. Swimming in the beach near the house is not allowed due to safety reasons but it can be a great spot for relaxation, reading a book or listening to music. You can enjoy the crashing of the sea waves as it hits the pebbles in the shore.
This tourist attraction is located at Barangay Nalyo Norte, Luna in La Union. There is an entrance fee of 20 pesos while children who are below 4 years old are free of charge. They are open daily from 6am to 8pm.
If you wish to visit this place, you can do so by riding a bus from Manila going to La Union. Once you are in La Union, you can ride another bus going to Balaoan Municipality. You can then ride a tricycle to the city of Luna. From Luna you need to take another tricycle going to Bahay na Bato. If you want to ride a jeepney then you can do so by taking a jeepney from San Fernando to Luna via the city of Bacnotan. From Luna you will need to ride another tricycle going to Bahay na Bato.
The bahay na bato was located at nalvo north beach of Luna, la union. Using a private vehicle particularly a car it will take you 1 hour and 30 minutes of driving time from agoo to the destination. If you do not have any private car you would need to ride a bus from Agoo to San Fernando with a ₱75 fair and 1 hour of travel time, after that you would need to ride a jeepney from San Fernando city proper to Luna with a ₱50 fair and a 45 minutes travel time, just tell the jeepney driver that you are going to the bahay na bato and they will direclty drop you off on the front road and you need to walk for 5 minutes to reach your destination, and finally you are on the Bahay na Bato.
We should pack important supplies such as hand sanitizers, power banks for electronics, wallets before heading to Bato de Luna. You will notice that the weather in April is typically hot and dry, with nearly no rain. Sunglasses, loose-fitting shorts or skirts, sunscreen lotion, breathable shirts, water-resistant footwear, and protective legwear are all recommended. These will protect your legs from UV rays. We should also bring umbrela and bottled water. Before coming to Bato de Luna, you need conduct some study, such as learning about the location and the protocols to follow. Before allowing you to enter, the personnel will ask for information such as your address, phone number, and body temperature. You can take a look around.You can photograph their works and learn about the historical context of their works.
Bato de Luna is a nice spot to relax because it is rich with art and the view is spectacular.
Finally, remember this mantra whenever we travel to a new location: “take only photographs,” because the only thing that can be murdered is time. And don’t forget to leave only your
footprints.”
